Max’s Old Hangout

This place has occupied the periphery of my family lore for my entire life. It’s the South Broadway Athletic Club in South St. Louis and it’s been in South St. Louis for over 100 years, catering to boxing and wrestling enthusiasts for generations.

It was also one of the places this guy trained.

Blue Skies

I don’t know, but I’m taking this as another sign that spring is almost upon us. I looked up to the sky and saw a little bit of rainbow peeking through the fluffy clouds. Like a promise…

Blue Skies

The clouds were so white and dramatic and the mere hint of the rainbow there in the center just set it all off…

But, The Hubs saw something else…

First Walk of the Season

Oh, happy day! Yesterday, it was finally warm enough to get back out on the trail for a walk with The Hubs! I could feel the long, cold winter losing its grip at long last!

First Walk of the Season

But, from a photography standpoint, it’s a rough time of year…LOL

Produce Row

This is a tricky post to write. Very touchy in my house. This is Produce Row in St. Louis, MO. It’s something of an oxymoron - an unknown landmark in St. Louis. Around for over 56 years, but very few know about or, if they do, they think it’s a regular farmer’s market.

Produce Row-1

It’s not. If people know about it at all, most would confuse it with the far more famous and historic Soulard Farmers Market, which is open to the public and traces its roots back to an open air market in the area in 1779. Produce Row, however, is made up of the wholesalers, the brokers, and the foodservice companies that serve the St. Louis and Illinois area businesses and resellers.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s Valentine’s Day and I have to say, I scored a big win in the “Valentine” department almost 25 years ago. The Hubs is the best. He just is. All these years later, I still know exactly how lucky I am…and I never take it for granted. There is no one else I would ever want riding shotgun on Life’s Road Trip!

First Snow–The Girl Child

A little over a month ago, we had our first snow. (Fortunately, it was nothing like the 10”-12” we got last year, because I’m just not ready for that.) The Hubs was taking a nap before dinner, so I asked the Girl Child if she wanted to tag along while I went out to play with my camera in the snow. It was nearly dark, we were due at my mother-in-law’s soon for dinner, and I still had to wake up The Hubs, but we headed out to a nearby park anyway.

While I was aimlessly shooting, the Girl Child walked around in the snow. It was nearly dark and I turned around just in time to shoot this. It has become a personal favorite of mine!

First Snow

I processed this in Lightroom to achieve the slightly hazy effect, but the lighting was odd that evening anyway. I just love this picture.

Goodbye 2014

I feel that niggling sentimentality sniffing at my edges again. It comes whenever there's a true Turning of the Page, and a new year is certainly that. It's possibly mental... Today is just a Wednesday, tomorrow just a Thursday, etc, and any day is a good day for change. It doesn't have to be a seminal day to make a new start. It's just a Wednesday, but it *is the last one of this year. So, I'll indulge just a bit.

Cyber-Bullying Hits Home

Shona Skye Creations - Cyber-Bullying Hits Home 001

This is going to be a long post, but it's important. Why? Because bullying is big news right now, both in my community and in the world today. Don't believe me?

  • A local school district is dealing with a bullying incident involving a reference to the Newtown shooter and Instagram.
  • A school shooting in California seems to have been triggered by bullying.
  • Just last week, a little ten-year-old girl committed suicide because of bullying.
  • A local mom/blogger I follow had to take her daughter's case of bullying to the local news.
  • A friend of my daughter's is the victim of an on-going bullying campaign by a classmate.
  • Even my own daughter, who is successful, well-liked, and self-confident, and actually is not your normal victim-type, was the target of someone creating a porn account in her name.

Believe me, there is nothing like dealing with a situation like that head-on and in real life to learn all the ins and outs real quick. But, I'm going to share it with you - with her permission - so you can be aware and proactive.

Bullying is everywhere. And this is my daughter's story.

Table, Teeth, & Treasure!

(Howdya like that aliteration, huh? LOL Just ignore me. I'm in a silly mood as I write this.)

Well, if you remember my POST yesterday, you saw the coffee table I picked up at Goodwill to replace the Ikea table that the was broken during my son's Star Wars marathon. Anyway, after we unloaded the table, I went right over to Home Depot and picked up some paint for it. As you can see, green and stained wood isn't going to work in this room:

Family Room Makeover 2012-01-07 001

Sorry for the abysmal picture. LOL I snapped it on the fly awhile ago. That's The Girl Child there with her laptop. There is always someone in that room. The only thing missing is the black carpet beneath the table. But, with red, white, black, and gray as the color scheme, you can see that the table is in need of a makeover just to fit in with the décor. Unfortunately, it's also about 28 degrees here, which is seriously cramping my style.

The Monday Morning "Goodwill Hunting" Report

Hi, my darlings! I know, I know. It's Monday. There's not much help for it. LOL So, grab a cup of coffee or tea, pull up a chair, and I'll show you what I did this weekend!

Shona Skye Creations - Goodwill Hunting 2013-01-14 (1)

I guess I should be excited that I found a solid, well-built coffee table, but the fact that I had to buy one at all is all kinds of aggravating. I'll tell you about that in a sec. But I'm super-excited about two of my other purchases this weekend!

Monday "Goodwill Hunting" Report & 2012 Wrap-Up

Hi, my darlings!! This is the last day (hopefully), I'm going to be flat-out behind on my posts. LOL I'm slowly but surely getting caught up after being out-of-commission for two weeks, but with the start of the new year, I'm also just slammed with all kinds of real life stuff clamoring for my attention. It's been tough finding the time to get caught up!

That being said, I managed to squeeze in all my thrift stores this weekend, but it was SLIM PICKINS! OMG!

Busy-ness and being The Sandwich Generation

Hey, gang! I'm so behind today and I'm not likely to catch up. I'm still finishing up making the bedroom livable again and I last night, I decided to hit my trash pile (yes, my trash pile) and rescue an old deck board to make a little sumthin-sumthin that I'll be posting later this week! Yes, when I dumpster-dive, I really dumpster-dive.

I caught this article, entitled "Costume Ideas for Parents Who Hate Their Kids", on (which almost always lives up to it's name for me) and, even though I’m a DIY-gal, I had to laugh, because I know how right they are. My kids would have rebelled at all of these and I would have died of embarrassment myself!
It got me to thinking, though, about all our costumes over the years, because I remember one particular meltdown by The Girl Child about ten years ago. This costume I had handmade for her oldest brother a few years before caused all hell to break loose:

Yeah, she’s smiling there. Don’t let that fool you. I probably bribed her with candy. Anyway, she had to go to preschool as a jack-o-lantern and I had a full-out rebellion on my hands. She wanted a store-bought princess costume! I wanted to utilize the costumes I had already made!

No Goodwill Hunting, but Holy Harley, Batman!

Happy Monday, everyone! Hope you had a share of the awesome fall weather we had here! It was windows open and just a touch of fall in the air! Love it!

Normally, I would have spent a good part of my weekend hitting up all my local Goodwill and thrift stores, but not this weekend. So, now, of course, I'm sitting here thinking that the most awesome whatzit ever was there and someone else got it! LOL

And why wasn't I out snatching up all the awesome finds?

My awesome, crazy, lovely, super-busy daughter - that's why!

Starting a BIG Project

First of all, let me introduce you to Nano, my wonderful Scottish mother-in-law. She is the youngest 81-year-old you would ever want to meet! Unlike many of her contemporaries, Nano LOVES to change things up. That's her, trying out an iPod. LOL And when Nano wants to change things up, you're likely to arrive for dinner and find a paintbrush next to your dinner fork! LOL

This is Nano. This is Nano on an iPod.
This is also Nano's dull kitchen
